Catalogue Note

With a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production in 1998 and sale on November 17th of 2000, setting pin and a presentation box with outer packaging.

Launched in 1992 with a total of 515 parts, the Reference 5013 is one of the most complicated wristwatches developed by Patek Philippe. When launched the model was the most complicated wristwatch ever manufactured by the company until it was superseded by the Ref.5016 in 1996 and again in 2001 with the introduction of the Sky Moon Tourbillon Ref.5002. The 5013 was the first wristwatch to incorporate a minute-repeater, perpetual calendar, moon-phases and retrograde calendar with a self-winding movement. The retrograde date hand moves along a 270 degree arc and at midnight of the last day of each month, it flies back to the first of the month. During this precisely controlled fly-back phase, the hand is disconnected from the drive train and is cleverly captured back on the 1st of the month to ensure it does not slip forward by a day.

The case of the Reference 5013 is highly reminiscent of Patek Philippe's most important vintage repeating wristwatches, no. 198.21 and made for Henry Graves Jr. The platinum version is illustrated in Huber, M., & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Second Edition, p. 315, pl. 470 a-d and the gold version sold by Sotheby¿s New York in June 2012 for over US$3 million.

Previously unknown to the market and offered for the first time publicly, this is only the 5th example of a pink gold Patek Philippe Ref.5013 to have appeared at auction since its release in 1992.
