Each enamel dial created for the 5075 limited series was done so by hand using the ancient art of cloisonné. Cloisonné is a process where a design is created on a blank canvas (the dial) using thin stripes of gold joined to the base that create a border between colors. Considered a ‘lost art’, each enameller will usually have a creation of their-own specially formulated colours to work with including a colour chart to use as a guide since the material changes in appearance when heated. The process can be extremely lengthy as each colour has to be fired separately at a different temperature, this also increases the chances of failure as the firing process is extremely delicate and even the most experienced can lose months of work due to unforeseen cracking during the process. Enameling is a specialty of Patek Philippe both in the form of cloisonné and portrait miniatures with some of the highest skilled artisans in the industry such as Mme Sechaud and Mme Tille undertaking special edition pieces. Created as a special edition in 2003 the Ref.5075 Dragon series was made in very limited numbers with four variants of background, blue, red, white and black. Due to the process in which the dials are made each watch in the series can be considered unique.
