This example of reference 881 is one of only 3 examples known to the market. Believed to have been manufactured in no more than 12 pieces, the model encompasses a perpetual calendar with leap year indicator, moon-phases and minute repeater into a substantial hunting case. Traditionally the company’s multi-complication pocket watches were housed with an open-face style case rather than a hunting case, the purpose of the full-hunter covered dial was to protect the fragile glass and was favoured by mounted hunters to protect he watch in the event of a fall.
Patek Philippe have undertaken very few pocket watches with complications since the sale of the wristwatch overtook that of pocket watches in 1930. Made in a classic hunting case the ref.881 affords the elegance of the early 20th century with the technology and reliability of modern manufacture.
