Widely accepted as the most important wristwatch manufactured this century, the Sky Moon Tourbillon, ref.5002 was launched in 2001 as Patek Philippe’s most complicated wristwatch and the first by the company to feature a double dial. Inspired by the Star Calibre 2000 pocket watch featuring a complex sky-chart, Patek Philippe were able to miniaturize the concept to fit into a wristwatch. Reserved only for their most important clients after meeting stringent qualifying requirements, suitable applicants must first pass an interview prior to being entered on to the extensive waiting list. Such is the complexity of the 686 part movement, it is reported only 2 examples in either gold or platinum are manufactured each year. Similarities in terms of importance to their relevant markets can easily be drawn to the Bugatti Veyron super-car, created without equal to demonstrate what is possible when all limitations were removed and only the best would be acceptable. Both the Veyron and Skymoon were created in an era of excess we will perhaps never see again. When the reference 5002 was launched in 2001 the watch market we know today was a very different place, a 43 mm diameter case was considered ‘massive’ and the possibility of a watch with 12 complications unthinkable, yet as technology and horology has evolved, over a decade later, the Skymoon still stands out in front as the single greatest wristwatch manufactured in the 21st century. When production for the 5002 ceased in 2011, this model offered is believed to be the penultimate  example released to the market and the youngest ever offered for auction. In addition, it is the first example of a Skymoon Tourbillon to appear fitted with a movement tested under the strict Patek Philippe seal introduced in 2009.

Since the model's introduction only 6 examples of the reference 5002 have appeared at International auction, all with movement numbers commencing 335 with the most recent manufactured, prior to this lot, in 2007. It can therefore be assumed that with the introduction of the Patek Philippe seal the company commenced a new movement number sequence starting 402. Traditionally fitted with a blue date indicator hand this lot is offered in with an attractive and striking red date hand.

No longer in production, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the last manufactured legends in watchmaking history and is offered in overall excellent factory condition.
