Catalogue Note
This unusual jade carving of a White Horse carrying sacred scriptures across turbulent waves is a Buddhist subject but may sometimes appear in conjunction with key Daoist cosmic symbols such as on a porcelain brushpot where it is depicted together with a tortoise and is thus associated with two important Daoist cosmic diagrams, the hetu and luoshu, borne on the backs of a horse and a tortoise as they appeared in the Yellow River and the Luo River; see Sotheby's New York, 20th March 2012, lot 93.
