Condition

The bowl is in very good overall condition with the exception of a few tiny nicks around the base ; the actual color is a fraction more celadon than the catalogue illustration would suggest.

Catalogue Note

The twin fish motif symbolises freedom from restrain as well as the wish for marital bliss, prosperity and an abundance of good luck. Because fish are reputed to swim in pairs and are known for their reproductive power, the pair of fish represent the joys of union and numerous offspring. The wish for peace and blessings is reinforced by the depiction of the bajixiang around the exterior of the bowl.

The present bowl is unusual for its broad everted rim and similar in shape to an example sold in our London rooms, 11th July 1966, lot 84. Compare another bowl similarly decorated with a pair of fish to the interior and the exterior carved with four Buddhist emblems divided by fu characters, sold in our London rooms, 4th November 2009, lot 132.
