Small ivory cases or boxes were made in a number of organic shapes, many of them with finely carved and stained details. See, for instance, a small reticulated and stained box and cover in the form of a melon resting on its side with flowers and tendrils extending over the sides, published in The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, cat.no. 124; compare also two similar gourd-shaped parfumiers, illustrated in Spink & Son, Ltd., Ivories of China and the East, London, 1984, cat.nos. 228 ad 229.
