Condition

Canvas is not lined. SURFACE: in good condition; scattered fine craquelure; canvas is slightly loose on stretcher and buckles along upper edge UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: scattered strokes of inpaint (craquelure fill-in, mostly)--some on her face and chest, most in background; a small repaint at lower center (about 1 by 2 in.)--repaired tear (there is a small glue patch on reverse of it)

Catalogue Note

Chase also painted the portrait of Mrs. Lloyd's husband, Francis Guerin Lloyd (1848-1920), whom she married in 1875.  Mr. Lloyd was the first president of Brooks Brothers, the famed clothier in New York.
