Catalogue Note
An artist of wide-ranging talents, Sheets was the foremost California Scene painter of the mid-twentieth century. Perhaps best known as a watercolorist, he was also an architect, mural and tapestry designer and mosaicist. In the early 1950s the founder of Home Savings of America, Howard F. Ahmanson, Sr., hired Sheets to design the exteriors and interiors of his company's bank branches. Over a period of almost 30 years and through his firm, Millard Sheets and Associates, the artist became the architect, designer and in-house artist for more than 40 branches of the bank throughout California. In each branch, he tried to capture the essence of the area's historical and natural features. The four panels of the present lot adorned the interior of the Home Savings of America branch in Whittier, California.
