Condition

Bronze is in very good condition overall with minor wear to the thick black patina, especially to his nose, edges of the helmet, and rim of the shoulders, and some oxydation consistent with age and handling. Remains of black lacquer to the giltbronze base.

Catalogue Note

Ménélas, roi de Sparte, fut l'une des figures majeures de la légendaire Guerre de Troie, qu'il déclencha afin de récupérer son épouse Hélène, enlevée par le prince troyen Pâris. Notre buste est une fonte en bronze d'après le marbre héllénistique du Pasquino (du IIIe siècle av. JC). Le guerrier lacédémonien est représenté coiffé d'un casque richement orné de figures d'animaux et d'une scène mythologique.
