Condition
Very good condition overall. Minor surface dust and a few scratches consistent with age.
Good bronze cast with dark brown patina (The photograph is slightly too light).

Catalogue Note
Le Gladiateur mourant eut beaucoup de succès au Salon de 177, et permit à Julien son entrée à l'Académie : "Il est composé avec génie, et supérieurement rendu. Ce n'est pas du marbre, c'est de la chair, c'est un malheureux qui expire, et dont on partage la douleur : en un mot cette figure est tout âme. On ne voit pas souvent des morceaux de réception de cette force." '(Jean-Baptiste Radet, Critique du Salon 1779). L'artiste envoie la terre cuite originale à la Société des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier pour l'exposer au Salon de 1779n (disparue), une esquisse du même sujet fut présentée en 1791 au Salon de l'Académie de Toulouse. Le morceau de réception en marbre est aujourd'hui conservé au musée du Louvre (Inv. no. RF4623). Deux versions en bronze sont connues de ce modèle, l'une au Los Angeles County Museum, une deuxième au Speed Art Museum.
