le Christ a le regard dirigé vers le haut, quelques larmes coulent de ses yeux, sa bouche entreouverte laisse apparaître sa dentition; sa longue barbe bouclée et sa longue chevelure ondulée finements modelés retombent sur ses épaules; il porte un perizonium drapé autour des hanches attaché par une corde

Condition
Very good condition overall with surface dust in the crevices, especially in the beard and hair of Christ, and in the folds of his perizonium. The Christ's arms are carved separately, joints visible on the shoulders. A few fine hairline cracks at several places consistent with age and handling,with one fine vertical crack going down in the front, as can be seen on the photograph. The ebonzied wooden cross with some wear and scratches to the surface, and minor oxydation to the silver mounts. The ivory Corpus is fantastically modelled, in a mannierist expression and very precise in all details. Very good sculpture, which can be highly recommended.

Catalogue Note
L'expressivité du visage souffrant du Christ et le modelé soigné et maniéré du corps musclé en léger déhanchement font de ce crucifix une ivoire tout à fait caractéristique du Baroque d'Italie du Nord au début du XVIIe siècle. L'attribution à Domenico Bissoni (1560-1645) se fonde sur son analogie avec un Crucifix en ivoire presque identique appartenant aux collections du Prince Liechtenstein à Vienne (cf. op. cit). Domenico Bissoni fut actif à Gênes et a travaillé au contact d'artistes allemands comme les sculpteur Georg Petel et le peintre flamand Van Dyck dont on peut ressentir une forte influence dans son oeuvre. L'ivoire présentée ici sera inclue dans la monographie sur l'artiste en préparation par Eike D. Schmidt, (conservateur en chef au musée de Minneapolis).
