Catalogue Note

In 1969, Etrog was working on a maquette for a sculpture which he called Voiovod, a Romanian name for a leader or tribal head.  While at work, he heard the news of the death of the great musician, Louis Armstrong.

When he finished the sculpture, he titled it Homage to Louis  in recognition of a man whom he had admired for many years.  A cast was then exhibited in Toronto, and was seen by the owner of this lot, who commissioned Etrog to make the same sculpture in black marble.
