Catalogue Note
Many itinerant artists painted the eastern sea board of Canada, the first stop in the exploration of the shortest route to the Orient. They recorded the harbour's quiet, sheltered waters, the progress of settlement and and the development of the industry in the community ashore. Herring Cove exemplifies the confidence of the residents of this far flung community as they establish themselves as commercial fishermen and shipbuilders.
