Catalogue Note

Laurier Lacroix writes:

From late October 1897 to mid-July 1907, Suzor-Côté lived in France almost continuously.  He made only two short trips to Quebec during this decade: once in the fall of 1901, for an exhibition of his paintings at Scott and Sons, and again in the second half of 1903, after his father died.  This long period, almost a third of his creative life, attracts more speculation than any other; there is little documentation, few works have resurfaced, and we must refer to the titles of his paintings to retrace his steps.  This chapter of his life will have to be revised once further research has shed light on his activities during these crucial years as he completed his training and his career took off.
