Catalogue Note
In the grand tradition of Impressionism, Robert Wakeham Pilot was concerned with painting everyday scenes, and strove to render the effects of light and weather on mood and landscape. To this end, he preferred to sketch and paint en plein air, allowing nature to affect his works directly. While he painted various views of Canada and Europe, Quebec was the most frequently recurring location throughout his career.
In this image of Quebec City, Pilot painted the change of season with a vivid exuberance that captured the spirit of the city that inspired so many of his images. As Paul Duval aptly noted: "No one, not even his step-father, the Impressionist Maurice Cullen, evoked the character of Quebec City with more affection or persuasion."
