Catalogue Note

Georgian Bay was a favourite destination of all artists of the Group of Seven, because of both what it had to offer in visual splendor, and Dr. McCallum's patronage and hospitality.  Arthur Lismer, in particular, returned frequently to this area of Ontario which inspired many, if not most, of his strongest images.

This painting exemplifies Lismer's later interest in closely depicting the topographic foreground, as opposed to his earlier works in which wider compositions were preferred.  Lismer observed his landscapes with an eye to their pulsating life and rhythm.  His loose brushstrokes and vivid palette depicted rugged splendor and captured the spirit of the North.  In addition to varied and bright hues, Lismer used thick impasto in this painting, which aided in conveying the vitality of nature, which was his mark.

Lismer, who once described Georgian Bay as a "paradise for painters," drew great inspiration from the Canadian landscape.  An icon of Canadian art, this image embodies Lismer's unique view and portrayal of what was arguably the most important location of his career.
