The summer of 1920 was Milne's first back in Boston Corners after his momentous service in the army and his work for the Canadian War Records, and it ended in a crescendo of activity that produced some of his finest and seminal paintings late that summer and into the autumn.
This watercolour and a related one (New England Landscape), were done on the same day, when Milne climbed to a high prominence in order to look west out across the valley below, toward the Hudson River valley in the farthest distance. Milne wasn't totally satisfied with the way he drew the clouds in the first painting, and he or Douglas Duncan subsequently cut about five inches (15 cm.) off the top, but he was happier about the result in the afternoon version:
106. August 11, afternoon. Watercolor half sheet. Similar subject and same idea [as New England Landscape]. Sky much more thoughtful and varied. Contours merging into patches. Dark mass in foreground not very decided.
