Catalogue Note

Little is known of Carmignani's brief sojourn in North America.  An artist who specialized in landscape and scenic views, his style is linked to painters in Parma, Italy.

Carmignani visited Quebec City in 1869.  One obligatory sight, winter or summer,  six miles down river was Montmorency Falls, a thunderous cascade of two hundred and seventy-five feet spilling into the St. Lawrence River - a drop far higher than Niagara Falls.  Artists such as Cornelius Krieghoff, Robert Todd, Joseph Legaré, James Pattison Cockburn, James Peachy and Joseph Dynes painted it, mostly with its large winter ice cone as the central feature, which was often large enough for sleighing and tobogganing.  Carmignani's autumn painting is a significant addition to the outstanding renditions of this site by other artists.

Samuel de Champlain, named the cataract after the Duc de Montmorency, in 1608.  This version is a hitherto unknown rendition of this Canadian phenomenon.
