Catalogue Note

Varley returned to British Columbia in his later years and stayed on the eastern side of Kootenay Lake. This mountain region had inspired much of his early work, and it revived him again late in life as this sketch clearly proves.

Even in his advanced years, he continued to have an intuitive perception in dealing with the interplay among cloud forms, sky, and mountains. His spirited sense of colour, and proficiency in depicting mountain masses remained intact.
