Cornelius David Krieghoff 1815 - 1872

This may be a view of the rapids above Montmorency Falls or the rapids on the Ste. Anne River, both near Quebec City, where Krieghoff was living in 1858, which is the approximate date of the painting.  Krieghoff was captivated by the romantic aspects of the Canadian landscape and painted numerous views of rapids and waterfalls.  Russell Harper writes, "Ste. Anne could be admired as well from another vantage point, by scrambling into the great gorge where gloomy cavernous depths were screened by tree trunks and brilliant autumn foliage."
