Catalogue Note

The years from 1951 to 1955 were a period in Lemieux's long career when his art underwent its most profound transformation.  Just as the Group of Seven were opposed to the importation of Dutch art to Canada, so too did Lemieux rail against imports from abroad; he was certain that in Quebec he could create a provincial art that was world class.

Until then, Lemieux was still working in the Charlevoix area of Quebec near the Saguenay River painting rural landscapes.  In this fine work, he has produced a landscape of great sensitivity in which every brushstroke bespeaks the artist's delicate touch.  The golden autumn colours echo and reverberate throughout the painting.
