Catalogue Note
Pepper was influenced by the Group of Seven and early in his career was invited to participate in their annual exhibitions. When they disbanded, he continued on as a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters.
He is known for the originality of his viewpoint and arrangement in his landscapes. His decorative brush transfers the scene into one of a bold format of line and pattern.
This fine sketch was probably painted in Baie-Saint-Paul, a community in the Charlevoix area of Quebec. This was a favourite sketching area for him and his artist wife, Kathleen Daly, and they built a permanent home there in 1931.
