Catalogue Note
Casson became a member of the Group of Seven in 1926 and soon realized that in order to maintain his individuality, he had to focus on what he liked best. This was not the rugged wilderness of the pre-Cambrian shield, but the generally tamer, small towns and villages of southern and central Ontario.
An exception to this was Algonquin Park, where he painted regularly from 1942 to 1945. Casson's style gradually became simplified and, in this sketch, he displays a sense of harmony with the dark, horizontal row of trees framed front and back by the gentler greenery of spring.
