Catalogue Note
Marc-Aurèle Fortin is best known for his vivid renderings of rural Quebec. A constant traveller throughout the province, he spent most of his career paying homage to the picturesque views of Quebec from Ste-Rose to the Ile d'Orleans, Charlevoix and Gaspé, during every season.
The figures in Fortin's landscapes and village scenes always play a secondary role to the more central environments they occupy. In this particular work, small loosely painted figures brace themselves against oversized snow flakes as they make their way along a village sidewalk.
Jean-René Ostiguy writes, "The content of Fortin's work may be defined as the participation of people in the poetry of the heavens."
