Catalogue Note

When he came to Canada in 1949, Iskowitz, a Holocaust survivor, started by painting the landscape around Toronto. Gradually, his paintings left behind the horrors of his early life and, inspired by the Canadian landscape, by new friends and other artists, became colourful, cheerful, and expansive expressions of considerable poise and power.

He has commented:

I painted what I know. I always try to get endless spaces that won't block the eye looking through, so that you wonder what is happening behind the paint.  Art is like a mystery.  Everything combines together - your social life, your painting, your friends - that's what makes it.
