This painting, perhaps titled as a result of Town's fascination with both baseball and billiards, was done in 1959 - right in the middle of an enormously productive and early decade in his career, which included his Single Autographic Prints, his delicate collages, a series of formidable drawings, and a stream of major canvases from the Homage to Turner, Great Seal, and Great Divide series to the Tyranny of the Corner.  Scoreboard has the calligraphic brilliance, the unerring structure and the dramatic colours that mark Town's best work.
