Catalogue Note

Riopelle's work is among the most important of the second half of the twentieth century.  No other artist can forcefully match his lyrical exploration of abstraction and his lines of tension; nor can they compete with his extraordinary capacity to see the powerful forces  of nature.

Painted circa 1974, this work was produced around the time Riopelle was sculpting, creating a series of paintings based on Inuit string games and executing The Kings of Thule series.
