Catalogue Note

In 1965, following the separation from his wife, Ewen lived for a time in Guido Molinari's studio in Montreal.  They developed a close relationship and Ewen credits Molinari with teaching him how to paint a rigid line.  Molinari's influence is apparent in this canvas of c. 1965, where Ewen divides the suface of the canvas in two with a single line.  The surrounding space consists of various geometric shapes painted white on white, creating an illusion of a figure-ground relationship.
