Catalogue Note

The shape of this dish, rimless on a small foot, appeared in Iznik around 1545 (Atasoy & Raby 1989, no. 27). It is unusual to have a chinese inspired design on one of these dishes, being normally used on larger vessels similar to the chinese originals, as the tazza previously offered in this sale. Iznik potters might have tested this design on different shapes, then didn't continue for all of them. Two other dishes with a similar shape and chinese inspired design are datable from the first half 16th century (Christie's, London, 13th October 1998, lot 213 & 214). The shape combined with the variation of this design with cherries, as on the dish in the Cinili Kösk, datable from 1550-60 (ibid. 1989, no: 373), suggest to date ours around 1550-60.
