Condition
Good condition overall with minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. Patina slightly rubbed off to the nose, eyebrows and drapery. Laruel crown and Golden Vlies necklace finely gilded.

Catalogue Note
L'effigie le plus célèbre de Charles Quint (1500-1558), l'empereur du Saint Empire Germanique, est celle réalisée par le sculpteur et médailleur italien Leone Léoni (1509-1590) de profil sur des médailles ou en forme de statue en bronze à mi corps (au musée de Prado). Le petit buste en bronze présenté ici se distingue par la finesse de sa ciselure et sa dorure. Comme il a été suggéré par Cyril Humphris, l'inscription CARL V pourrait renvoyer vers une origine autrichienne, tout vraisemblablement un sculpteur comme Balthasar Ferdinand Moll (1717-1785), elève du célèbre Georg Raphael Donner, ayant travaillé à la cour des Habsbourg à Vienne.
