rectangular, the box later inset with a translucent scarlet enamel panel set with the crowned cipher of Ernst August, King of Hanover, the four corners further applied with collet-set rose diamonds, the ground scattered with blue enamel flower sprays and applied scrolls on a sablé ground, the sides engine-turned within similar borders, marks almost illegible but probably those of Charles Collins Söhne

Catalogue Note
Ernest Augustus (1771-1851), fifth son of George III, King of Great Britain, was Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale from 1799. He became King of Hanover in 1837, on the death of his elder brother William IV, since under Salic Law, his niece Victoria was unable to inherit the kingdom of Hanover.
