Excellent condition. As mentioned in the footnote, the woman is quite crudely carved compared to the man.

Catalogue Note
The carving of the couple is based on a Roman marriage cameo such as one seen on the magnificent cameo-set enamel bowl and cover in Rosenborg Castle (Jorgen Hein, The Treasure Collection at Rosenborg Castle, vol. III, Copenhagen, 2009, p. 73, no. 664/21). The same bowl is also decorated with two German cameos (op. cit., nos. 664/26 & 31), very similar to the present lot, of Casimir, Margrave of Brandenburg and Susanna his wife after a medal by Matthias Gebel, circa 1527. An example of Gebel's medal is to be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, as are medals by the same artist of gentlemen with similar distinctive forked beards (such as that of a son of Martin Geuder, 1530-1550, and that of Christoph Tetzel of Nuremberg, circa 1538. It is also interesting to note that in the medals, the female is worked in equal detail to the male whereas in each case in the cameos, the male is delicately carved and the woman behind is barely delineated.
