Catalogue Note

***

The Naples town mark struck on this bowl, is recorded on a bust of Saint Bartholomew in the convent of Santa Chiara, Naples and on a reliquary in the cathedral of Ravello, dated respectivley 1470 and 1471 (1).  The bowl was probably used for drinking wine, the ornament then being visible through the transparent liquid, the gilded parts, domed centre and concave ring providing depth to deepen the colour. Twelve parcel-gilt footed bowls, otherwise similar can be seen in a fresco in Palazzo Altemps, Rome, showing the wedding gifts at the marriage in 1477 of Girolamo Riario and Caterina Sforza
