Catalogue Note

The paintings of Peter Vos are an excellent example of a clinical approach to figuration. In both his treatment of his subjects and paint handling and technique, Vos strives for purity. The subjects are stripped of extraneous detail and history. His technique also restrains from revealing any traces of the actual painting process. His brushstrokes are invisible and his palette neutral. Vos stays close to observation, always avoiding any departure into graphic abstraction. His themes and subjects address the imagination. Portraits of animals rendered in a technical tour-de-force, their pelts, claws or feathers almost tangible. But Vos also cuts into close-ups, revealing the structure and texture with uncanny precision. The detailed portraits of young and mature animals evoke a mood that is at once slightly oppressive yet intimate.

Peter Vos was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 2000-2001.
He won the Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst (NL) in 2004.
