Catalogue Note

Bred by Mr Saddler of Yorkshire by Adventurer out of Ferina by Venison, The Pretender was brought as a yearling by John Johnstone, Master of the Dumfriesshire Hounds.  Trained at Tupgill by Thomas Dawson, he won the North of England Biennial at York as a two year old before narrowly beating Belladrum in the 2000 Guineas.  Starting favourite for the Derby, with John Osborne up, he again won narrowly by a head from Pero Gomez.  His subsequent career however was inglorious, as indeed was his record at stud.
