Catalogue Note

The early date of this view of Manhattan, seen from the hills of Weehawk (now Weehawken, New Jersey), makes this drawing incredibly unusual.  We know of two lithograph views from the same vantage point: one by Jacques-Gérard Milbert, for his series, Itinéraire pittoresque du fleuve Hudson from 1816-1823, and another by William Guy Wall dated circa 1820-23, for which the preparatory watercolour is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.1
