Catalogue Note
This very charming scene is similar to paintings by François, and the ladies wear dresses and hats very comparable to those that he depicted in his fashion plates. A pastel from the collection of the Marquis de Livois of a similar subject but with different measurements is listed in Gaëtane Maës's book, Les Watteau de Lille.1
1. See G. Maës, Les Watteau de Lille, Paris 1994, p. 483, cat. no. FD 262, including full provenance and literature.
