Description

  • Claude-Joseph Vernet
  • a small masted boat
  • Pen and brown ink and grey wash over black lead, within brown ink framing lines;
    bears initials in brown ink, lower left: VV, and numbering in pencil, lower right: 21;
    the name of the boat inscribed on the stern: T.V.DELA.FRA (?)    

Condition

Unframed. The sheet has been cut in half horizontally, and repaired on the verso. The upper left corner was also torn, similarly restored. Some small nicks to the edge of the sheet near the lower right corner. The remains of a diagonal fold near the upper left corner, also a horizontal fold across centre. Two light brown circular stains below the upper right corner and some other very small light brown stains near the lower edge. The medium, however, still good and strong.

Catalogue Note

Comparable to two studies of boats in the same media, one sold in London, Sotheby's, 22 October 1984, lot 298, the other  in Paris, Christie's, 23 March 2006, lot 303.  The latter was part of the album of drawings by Vernet compiled in Vienna in the early 19th Century and dispersed at a sale in Versailles in 1966 (lot 66).
