Catalogue Note
Robert spent some time at Frascati and made numerous studies at the villas and gardens there, particularly of the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati itself. As the inscription indicates, this view was made behind Mondragone, a villa on the outskirts of Frascati, which had been commissioned by Cardinal Marco Altemps during the papacy of Gregory XIII, Boncompagni (1572-85). It later became the property of cardinal Scipione Borghese who enlarged it. In modern times it became a famous Jesuit college and later a seminary. The villa took its name from its dominant hill-top position and from the numerous dragons which decorate the building as the heraldic device of the Boncompagni Pope.
