Catalogue Note

Robert was in Rome from 1754 to 1765.  He was sent to the French Academy by the Comte de Stainville (later the Duc de Choiseul) and he seems to have established himself there quickly and earned a good report as well as commissions.  Aside from studying classical antiquities and architecture, the students were urged to go out to draw in the countryside.  The present work, made at the end of Robert's stay in Rome and after his important trip to Naples with the Abbé de Saint-Non and Fragonard, shows that he continued to delight in making studies from nature.  There are several red chalk drawings also dated 1763 in the extensive collection in the Musée de Valence.1
