Catalogue Note

The drawing on the recto of this sheet is a free and energetic copy after most of Pieter Bruegel the Elder's celebrated and widely copied 1565 painting, Winter Landscape with a Bird Trap, the primary version of which is now in Brussels.1  The right hand side of the composition is, however, omitted, but forms the subject of the even more freely drawn copy on the verso.  The style and quality of these drawings suggest that they were made by an artist fairly close to the master himself.
