Catalogue Note

The first of the two drawings in this lot shows Volterrano's freely-drawn first thoughts for his fresco, Flora and Zephyr, in Palazzo Capponi, Florence (now destroyed).  Two other related drawings were identified by Charles McCorquodale, a more developed preparatory sheet in the Instituto Nazionale per la Grafica, Rome and another in a private collection.Although the fresco has not survived, the letter on the verso of the present sheet has provided it with a firm date of 1653.

Both sheets were part of the extraordinary Volterrano sale of 1980.  The catalogue included almost two hundred sheets from every period of the artist's career and was written by McCorquodale, a former owner of these drawings.
