Catalogue Note
'...Lenkiewicz reverted to his personal relationships in Project 18 The Painter with Women: Observations on the Theme of the Double...... The project became divided into three sub-themes: The Temptation of St Anthony, Aristotle & Phyllis and The Daemon Series. As the paintings became larger and more detailed, the colours grew more sensual and vivid, reflecting the hallucinatory aspect of the themes. Lenkiewicz's ironic intent may have by-passed some but the Project was an attempt to extend and clarify some of the themes from previous Projects such as Love & Romance, Jealousy and The Painter with Mary about the nature of relationships:
The assumption that we are empathic, concerned about the welfare of another person independently of our own need is, like St Anthony's visions, hallucinatory.'
