Condition

There are various small scuffs to the surface revealing the lighter ground beneath. These are especially visible to the bottom left hand corner, above the signature, to the left hand edge and to the top right. There is a stretcher mark to the top edge. There is some surface dirt evident including vertical watermarks to the bottom left. Under ultraviolet light there is evidence of retouching to the top edges of the vase, within the leaves and to the decoration on the vase. Held in a gilt and painted wooden frame.

Catalogue Note

The present painting shows the leaves of the great magnolia that is situated at the front of Charleston House. The vase is floridly painted and dated circa 1890, and is still at Charleston today.
