  • On Friday Afternoon We Visited Gt Aunt Jane
  • signed with fly device; also signed, dated 1968, titled and inscribed on a label attached to the reverse:  Although it was bright and sunny when we called on Gt Aunt Jane her house was so dark and gloomy we always had to have the candles lit so that she could see if I was saying the Ten Commandments correctly. Mother is in half mourning and having forty winks while I struggle with Gt Aunt Jane. Her pictures, like her house are dark and of terrible battles. George and I and the dogs (Gyp and Barney) (who had spent the afternoon growling at the Tiger Rug) were always glad to get out into the sunshine and Home and The year was 1907.

Condition

There is a surface scratch to the upper body of the left hand sitter. There is a slightly worn patch within the upper left quadrant, that reveals a small area of the canvas beneath. The surface of the work is slightly dirty. Otherwise it is in its original condition. Presented in a gilt, wood and plaster frame with a hessian inlay. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals several minor spots of retouching to the upper right section of the fireplace.
