Catalogue Note

'The eastern wall of our Indian Empire. The scene depicts the famous Procession of Umbrellas moving towards a huge pagoda, guarded on each side by two mythical beasts with tongues of fire. The effect of coolness which the masses of white give to the tropical atmosphere is note-worthy.' (The Red Lacquer Room, Austin Reed, London, p.4)
