Condition

The work is executed on brown wove paper. There appears to be a spot of staining to the sitter's face, although this may have been caused by the artist during the creation of the work. The ink used for the signature has faded. Held under glass and presented in a black, gilt, wood and plaster frame, with a blue mount.

Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1903.

'A profile head of a woman in a high-necked dress. She does not resemble Sickert's usual prostitute models, but has the aloof air of a formal sitter. Sickert used the title 'Romana' for drawings of a very different character, for instance a nude in the British Museum 'Nude Girl Lying on a Bed' circa 1907'.

We are grateful to Dr. Wendy Baron for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.
