Description

  • length 10 5/8 in.
  • 27 cm
each painted with the arms of Chadwick quartering Malvesyn, Carden, Bagot and Heton suspended from a purple bowknot and above crossed green boughs, inscribed in script on the reverse Canton in China 24th Jany. 1791. Covers lacking, rim chip and some minor flaking to the blue enamel.

Condition

Both are lacking covers and have several minor flaked patches to the blue enamel band on the rim; one has a 1/2x5/8-in. chip mostly to the inderside of the rim Otherwise they are in good condition.

Two examples from this service made for Lieutenant Colonel John Chadwick (1720-1800) of Healey Hall, Lancaster, are illustrated and fully discussed by David Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, p. 741, no. W1, who notes that this is "the only service so dated."  A platter painted with these arms was in the Collection Mr. and Mrs. Rafi Y. Mottahedeh, sold, Sotheby's, January 30, 1985, lot 264.
