Catalogue Note

For a related piece, compare the rock crystal mace-head attributed to the reign of al-Hakim (r.996-1021) in the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo (ex-Hariri Collection, inv. no. 15445) (London 1976, no.105, p.126; Trésors fatimides du Caire, Paris, 1998, no.86, p.140; Schätze der Kalifen. Islamische Kunst zur Fatimidenzeit, Vienna, 1998, no.105, pp.132-133). The diminuitive scale of the present piece rules against its use as a mace-head. The cruciform ornament suggest the possibility of a Coptic function as part of a liturgical or ceremonial staff.
